Drum Lessons For The Very Beginner By Zebedee Kay

Learning to play the drums is one thing that a lot of young people dream of doing. Contrary to popular belief it isn’t impossible. Some people can play almost instantly. It has been described as patting your head whilst rubbing your belly. It isn’t that hard. As with most instruments it just takes dedication and practice and a little bit of knowledge.

The basics.

Which drums are what? The drum kit is usually set up in the same way wherever you go. As you sit facing the drums the, looking from right to left they are set out as follows:

1. Floor tom, as suggested it is sat near the floor.
2. Crash cymbal, almost above the floor tom.
3. Toms, sitting above the bass drum.
4. The bass drum, sits below the toms and is the one everybody loves to bash with the foot pedal.
5. Snare drum, the one with the wire on the back.
6. Ride cymbal.
7. Hihat, looks a bit like a cymbal.

Other components can be added and often are but these form the basic drum kit.

Drumming is all about holding a rhythm, the rest of the band will be playing along to the rhythm of the drummer so you have to sound good. Practice is the key to good drumming although some people are naturally good drummers.

Drum sticks.

The drum stick is an essential part of the drum kit. Without it there would be no sound. They come in different lengths shapes and sizes, most are made of wood and some have a little nylon nib glued on. They all provide the same function but they all feel very different. Try a few out until you find one that is comfortable to use.

Slow beginnings

In the beginning the only aims you should have are to hold a steady beat therefore you should concentrate on the parts of the drum kit that will allow you to just practice your beat. Most people start with the toms and maybe a hihat.

A drum rhythm is split up into bars, which are basically just blocks of beats. A 4 beat rhythm will have 4 beats in the bar and maybe a crash symbol on the 4th bar. The beats can be a snare or a bass drum, basically anything that you can use to create a rhythm. Keep practicing a 4 beat rhythm until you can hold it pretty good.

Becoming a good drummer is all about having the patience to carry on practicing until you can hold a complex rhythm. Keep practicing and you will soon be drumming like a pro.
